Some guy on Reddit just went on an epic campaign to convince me not to buy a Lotus Elise.

Take this nice, yet dirty, V8 Vantage picture as a bonus.

So I was pretty much settled on my next car. IDK if this guy is fear mongering or what but he sure has inceptioned me when it comes to the Lotus Elise and Evora. Previously I was “inceptioned” about my WRX I owned years ago after TWO of my friends had blown engines. I couldn’t drive the car like I wanted to anymore because I was in fear at all times of it blowing up, so I ended up selling it.

Now it’s off to find another alternative once more.

I know people might mention alternatives so car requirements:

Sports Car - on the lighter or more nimble side.

Decent (imo) Power to Weight. ie. 3000lb 300hp car. No 240SX or FRS type vehicles. Tiny cars, ie elise, I have more of a tolerance for missing the mark here because they simply feel faster than they are.

Street class Autocrossable - No supercharged FRS or 2zz MR2, though other than this they would fit.

Not overly power - no 500+hp cars.

Can be had for around $30,000 give or take $5k-$10k depending on how excited I am for the car.

What kind of vehicle it is is irrelevant to me really. If they made 4 door wagons that check these boxes, like a turbo E30 touring, I would be up for it. It just has to be a capable quick nimble vehicle.

edit: I guess my link/picture is getting kinja’d?

How much are you going to drive it?

Really depends on what kind of car I pick. If it was an elise I would do typical daily driver things, it grocery shopping, with my other car other than I would probably do a 50/50 work split with my other vehicle. My job is a straight line highway drive for about 20 minutes. That’s it. 30 seconds of sidestreets until the on ramp and no traffic since it’s a desert highway.

Other than that I would be driving to like willow springs and phoenix (from vegas) with this car. Which is really what killed the Elise dreams.

How about a nice low-mileage, warrantied certified pre-owned 370Z for $25k?

That trouserpudding person strikes me as a pedantic ass. I have a friend who has two Elises. The second one was acquired within probably the last two years. It will be used as a track only car, single center seat, etc. The other one he’s had for a decade doing very frequent track with and lots of street driving as well. Both he bought wrecked and rebuilt himself in his home shop. You wouldn’t know it by looking at them. Oh, and he’s a lawyer by day. No mechanical, technical, automotive training of any kind. The chassis on the second was cut by the jaws of life, so he had to source a replacement but it sol came with a bunch of good parts and more importantly a VIN. They are certainly not unrepairable or automatically prohibitively expensive to repair. If that’s the car you want, go for it.

I can’t imagine being in an Elise that long and I’ve never even sat in one. I would look at those old Japanese halo/touring cars optionally with a mod budget, but then again that’s my solution for everything. I got an RX-8 in top trim recently and I’ve done some 6 hour drives in it and felt great. Never better than any of the other cars I’ve had. I never owned a touring/GT car before, and holy god it is amazing.

Anyways those types of cars are fairly light and respond well to mods, not that some of the higher trims (e.g. 300ZX-T) needed much. I’d take it over BMW or MB any time. Might be worth considering with that amount of money available, slightly less obvious choice, but man they are cool.

all this talk about how easily damaged it gets i keep hearing that leads tot he car being totaled. I didn’t take is so seriously at first but people are being so admant about it.

I will want more than a base, no limited slip on base, but I have considered it.

I would need a 2015 and later too. The earlier cars have cooling issues, serious, and I plan on using this in street autocross where there is no allowance to fix that.

Going over a speedbump isn’t gonna break the car, unless go 30+ mph. They’re just being pedantic and probably have other, more opinionated reasons against the Elise. Test drive one and see if you like it, that’s the real solution. Or ask EL_Uly, he’d probably know more.

2002-2004 C5 Z06. 405 HP, 3118 lbs, 6 speed manual, and only $25k for a nice one. Throw on a set of really sticky tires wrapped around forged wheels and absolutely dominate at everything.

I really have been thinking this more and more but I was never a corvette guy so it’s hard to convince myself lol.

You are 100% right, it is perfect.

There were a lot of CPO’s available nationwide when I did the search. Should be possible to get a 2016 sport or maybe touring for right around the $30k mark, but there aren’t too many out there.

They’re not easily damaged. Fibreglass can be difficult to repair. But that’s a terrible reason not to buy a car.

Just don’t crash it

people are making ridiculous claims like that hitting a rabbit can total the car lol

eh a really big rabbit and lots of velocity? maybe.

it’s more likely that a low speed fender bender might total it, but that’s only because the fiberglass clams will be destroyed.

and with fenderbenders these days I feel insurance companies are quick to write it off anyway.

This kind of stuff is why one day I just straight up quit reddit. Reddit is inhabited by the whiniest, lamest people on the planet. Just a huge group of babies. When you read that stuff all the time they start convincing you of their “safe” way of life. I realized it affected me so much I wasn’t having fun in real life anymore. So I quit cold turkey and 100%. Haven’t been on reddit once since that day.

Get busy livin or get busy dying. Buy your car and give reddit the finger.
